Smell The Roses

I bought roses today for Valentines day tomorrow. How can I keep them nice and fresh for tomorrow?

I ordered roses for my girlfriend and had them delivered today to my place so I could put them in a nice vase and give them to her myself tomorrow. How can I keep them fresh? I already took them out of the box they came in. I heard that putting them in the fridge will dry them out, is this true?!?!

Glad you asked.

Myths abound about keeping cut flowers. Roses are different from other flowers. Here’s how to keep them fresh as daisies while you’re waiting for the big day:

1. Find a tall container that holds stems all the way up to the bloom. (This will be harder to do if you splurged on long-stemmed Roses.) The container doesn’t have to be pretty for now. Just make sure it’s clean as a whistle. You want to do your best to avoid bacteria, which multiply like rabbits in phloem and xylem. Microorganisms plug up xylem cells, blocking water uptake. Your container must be non-metal (NO lead crystal and silver!). Reason: Metal reacts with the preservatives, and makes them worthless. The Farmer’s Almanac recommends scrubbing with bleach for best results.

2. NEVER fill a vase with cold water. Low temperatures constrict cells. Hot water is just as bad; it damages them. Warm water, with a temperature close to 110 degrees F, is ideal. This helps to minimize air bubbles (which block water flow) and keeps water flowing efficiently. If possible, use bottled water; purified water, even better. Fluoridated water contains chemicals that are toxic, which shortens vase life. Researchers that need to extend vase life in a lab use distilled water on botanical test subjects.

3. You probably received an envelope of Flower preservative with your order. If not, don’t fret. You can make your own. The basic formula is simple: Mix 2 tablespoons of sugar with 2 tablespoons of vinegar (technically, Acetic Acid, for disinfecting acidity) or lemon juice (preferred for its high concentration of citric acid) and 1/2 tablespoon of bleach (to wipe out bacteria). Acidic water (ideally, around 3.0) not only retards growth of bacteria, but eases water flow up through the stem. Note that this is another reason to use purified water – fluoride and chlorine tend to react with floral preservatives, making them less efficient. Chrysal is a favorite of Rose exhibitors.

Floralife brand flower preservative, by the way, is primarily Hydroxytricarbacllylic acid — a synonym for Citric Acid. It’s not the Vitamin C that works. It’s the low pH of Citric Acid, which inhibits bacteria.

4. Any leaves on the stems that will be under water must be removed completely. Wet leaves cause bacteria to thrive.

5. Take the advice of the American Rose Society: Submerge Rose ends, then re-cut an inch off stems under water. This keeps those damaging air bubbles out of stems tissue. You should slice or cut at a 45 degree angle to maximize the exposer of stem tissue to water. This also elevates the bottom tips off the floor of the vase, which would keep water from flowing up.

6. Set flowers in the coldest space in the house — or, if it’s above freezing, a garage or your car. If you have no fruits or vegetables there (which release life-shortening ethylene gas), your refrigerator is also a safe option. Avoid “direct sun, heat from appliances or electric lights, or hot or cold drafts,”

7. “If a rose wilts or is wilted upon receipt, remove it from the arrangement and recut the stem,” writes Sandra Mason, Unit Educator of Horticulture at University of Nebraska Extension Service. “Submerge the entire rose including the stem and leaves by laying it in a pan of warm water or in the bathtub, replace in the arrangement after it has revived, often after 20 minutes to an hour. Some immature roses which have been cut too tight and have wilted severely at the neck (the stem just below the flower) can never be revived.”

8. Change water every day. Bacteria populations rise with every hour. Fresh water turns the clock back. Research shows you can extend the vase life of your Roses by several days by doing that.

9. Don’t discard stems with “hanging necks”. You might be able to bring them back to life by re-cutting the stem again under warm water, then immersing the entire stem under water in the sink. An hour is long enough to determine whether this stem has more life in it, or is spent.
