Making a childrens Flower bed…?
I am making a small flowerbed/garden for my children. I want to get very hearty plants for them to plant as it would upset them if the plant did not grow or died… what do you suggest for Tucson?? Please cacti! Thank you.
Planting anything in Tucson in the summer is iffy because conditions are so hot and sometimes intensely humid. Few plants can tolerate transplanting at this time of year and seedlings really struggle. The problem is that UV light is so intense in the desert that anything grown in a sheltered location will not survive the new exposure. Your best bet is to create a garden beneath the canopy of trees or shade cloth.
Among the few plants that may be able to hold up during summer planting from one gallon sized plants are:
Purple Fountain Grass Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum’ – This plant produces very touchy feely flower stalks in the late summer.
Aloe species including aloe vra. Kids love to put it on their sunburns! Buy a plant from a local garden center to ensure it is desert hardy.
Autumn sage Salvia greggii hybrids – The red flowered forms are huge hummingbird lures. Plant from 1 gallon pot.
Nagami Kumquat – This smaller citrus makes olive-sized fruits with edible peels that kids can pick and eat over a long season.
